This week’s guest is Head of Pensions and Savings at investment platform Interactive Investor, Becky O’Connor. We cover the results of a recent large-scale survey of individuals’ hopes and worries about investing for retirement, as well as a wider discussion of the conversation the investment industry needs to have with individuals.
- Recent interactive investor retirement survey 'The Great British Retirement Survey 2021'
- Becky explains more in her blog 'A soundtrack to The Great British Retirement Survey 2021'
We discuss:
-
Do individuals have more of an “investor mindset” in the UK now (post the whole switch to more emphasis on individuals eg auto-enrolment and pension freedoms)?
-
Does the investment industry communicate effectively to individuals? What could improve?
-
Becky serves a “broad church” of individuals at Interactive Investor. How does she think about talking to and serving the different segments of customers that might want more or less specialisation and technical content?
-
We delve into some of the key takeaways from recent interactive investor research.
-
Does Becky feel young people are more or less engaged about pensions than historically?
-
What Becky thinks the industry has got wrong and could do better in terms of making itself relevant to individual investors.
-
What Becky is most worried about and interested in over the next 12 months.
One thing to take away
Positive reassurance can go a long way with investors. Keep more stories coming about what pensions are and what they are invested in, make them relevant to younger people, not just for older people, and tell positive stories about pensions.
The most underappreciated thing about investing
The power of compounding.
