This week’s guest is LCP Partner Norbert Fullerton who sheds some light on the investment approaches and social role of African institutional investors, as well as sharing some thoughts on his own professional journey and where the industry stands today on diversity and inclusion.

Read Norbert’s article in the latest edition of our investment magazine, Vista.

We discuss:

  • African institutional investors:

    • Who are they?
    • What role are they playing socially?
    • What do you see as the future for them?
  • How do African institutional investors invest – the similarities and differences to UK asset owners.

  • How African investors are thinking about their overseas investment allocations, and also how local infrastructure fits into the picture.

  • Potentially conflicting goals in terms of investing to stimulate local economic growth and investing globally for returns.

  • The different types of sovereign investor e.g. Central banks vs pension schemes and how this influences their investments.

  • Norbert’s own journey from his boyhood home in Jamaica, to an actuarial scholarship in the UK, to a long career in the investment world where he rarely encountered other black professionals around the Trustee table.

One thing to take away

On diversity & inclusion: take action – be bold. It's easy to make statements and sit on conference panels, but it's much better to actually do something.

The most underappreciated thing about investing

In an industry driven by individualism, the power of partnerships is greatly underappreciated.
