Show hosts Dan Mikulskis and Mary Spencer welcome LCP's David Millar who talks us through the dark arts of communication, and how we might improve investment communications for the benefit of investors.

We discuss

  • The basic principles of communicating and how communications have evolved;
  • Investment communications – challenges / tips from the provider and receiver perspective; and
  • David’s “communications pyramid” and why most communication focuses in the wrong places.

One thing to take away

Little and often is better when it comes to communications. If you don’t communicate to your customers something else will fill the void (eg social media).

Most underappreciated thing

Just because everyone can write, doesn’t mean communications isn’t a very specialist role where you need experts. Communication experts will look at your communications in a very different way to how you will.

Recommendations

  1. Is it correct?
  2. Is it understandable?
  3. Has it been read?
  4. Has it actually been understood?
  5. Is it helpful to make decisions?
