See what our recent graduates have to say about their experience so far with LCP.
Andy, Pensions Actuarial, London
During my penultimate year at university, I really wasn't sure what I
wanted to do as career, so decided to give actuarial work a go. I applied
for summer internship positions at a number of companies, but the decision
to accept LCP's offer was an easy one. The office location is amazing,
being right in the heart of Mayfair. There are loads of great places to
grab some lunch, or meet friends after work, and the transport links are
fantastic too. The office was well-equipped and the company is very
forward-thinking, but best of all everyone that I came into contact with
at interview, was so friendly, I just knew that I would fit in.
In July 2005, I was one of four students who started eight week summer placements
at LCP, and was placed in the Pensions Actuarial Department. I had a fantastic
summer, got involved in a large number of projects on a wide range of clients
and met some great people in the process. I enjoyed my placement so much that
I was very happy to extend it for an extra couple of weeks. I may only have been
a temporary member of staff, but I was quickly made to feel part of the team and
was very sad to leave!
When my placement finished, I was offered a permanent graduate position starting
in September 2006. The decision to accept this was an easy one! Knowing that I
had a job lined up, and one that I knew I would enjoy, helped to make my final
year at university much less stressful.
Since starting as a graduate at LCP, I have become involved in as much as I can.
I have been involved in a many different types of work, and regularly work directly
for partners and other senior members of staff. I really feel that the company value
my contribution. I am a regular member of the football and cricket teams, but have
also attended and organised lots of different social events, such as ten-pin bowling,
pub crawls and a team Christmas party.
David, Financial Dynamics, London
I recently joined LCP and now work in the FD department. I found the LCP graduate process
refreshingly straight forward. The assessment day was really well structured and it gave me
a great opportunity to meet the people I would be working with.
At university I did an undergraduate and a masters in Economics and Econometrics. This
background has been invaluable in the work I've done at LCP. The FD team is always developing
innovating ideas which has given me a great opportunity to use my statistical background. I've
also found that my knowledge of economics has been invaluable when researching future business
opportunities.
It has also been very rewarding to use the material I've learnt as part of the actuarial exams
in my day to day work. My experience of the FD department is that it will use any knowledge
which can benefit our clients. Indicative of this is that I've worked with colleagues from all
across the firm who all have a diverse range of skills and specialties. This has been a great
opportunity to learn new ideas and work with new people.
An example of the kind of work I've been involved in is modelling risks and cash flows for
clients (Government department and private companies). This work has given me a lot of client
contact, perhaps much more than I would have in other actuarial roles. Another example of the
work I've been involved in is researching potential areas of business for the FD department.
Outside of work one of the other great things I've found about LCP is the great social atmosphere.
There is always some social event going on either with your team or across the whole firm. I'm
now part of the social committee and it is great to have been able to meet so many people.
James, Investment Consulting, London
I joined LCP as part of the September graduate intake in 2006. The first few weeks are quite a
steep learning curve but really enjoyable. You're in training for the majority of the time
(either formally or "on-the-job"), which is a great chance to get to know all your colleagues.
It also really sets you up well for when you're "unleashed" on the real work. Besides London,
our other major office is in Winchester and time is spent between these two locations so you get
to meet as many people as possible.
I'd just finished doing a Master's degree in Mathematics with Engineering at the University
of Nottingham. I had already spent a year working in the IT industry, in order to experience
other areas, but really wanted to get into an actuarial role as it was more challenging and
ultimately more rewarding. I wanted to find a role that was fast-paced and involved a lot of
interaction with others - investment consultancy seemed to fit the bill perfectly.
As a junior member of the investment department, I'm involved in a wide range of projects
including investment strategy reviews, monitoring of pension scheme's investment performance
and investment manager research. The work is always varied and interesting - no two jobs are
the same. The investment department at LCP is very interactive and this is seen right the way
down to the junior levels. The communication aspect of the job is also quite emphasised, both
internally with the other departments and externally with clients and investment managers.
It's a great opportunity to build relationships with some really intelligent and enthusiastic people.
I haven't looked back and I've tremendously enjoyed working at LCP. My colleagues are really
amusing and fun and I genuinely enjoy working with them. There's a big social aspect to working
at LCP and everyone is keen to get involved with the numerous activities and sporting events.
It really is the people that make LCP such a great company to work for and it's them that make
post-work drinks in the West End so enjoyable.
I remember being asked in interviews "Where do you see yourself in five years time?". I'd always
had trouble answering this before - having joined LCP I don't think I'll have that issue anymore.
Nick, Insurance Consulting, London
I have been at LCP for just over six months, having graduated from King's College London, and
have loved every minute. I was originally drawn to LCP by the great people and the atmosphere
in the office on the interview day, and I haven't been disappointed.
The training has been well structured and already I have a good understanding of insurance,
without being overloaded with work in the office. Working and studying is a whole different
kettle of fish to student life, but LCP really encourages a strong work-life balance and the
social scene is just as good as at university. Revising for exams whilst maintaining a social
life has already taught me some valuable lessons in time management - the phrase work hard and
play hard at university has simply become work hard and play even harder!
The Insurance Consulting practice is a really exciting field to work in - intellectually
challenging and fast moving. At LCP the group is steadily growing and the support is fantastic,
but we are certainly expected to use our own initiative. I have already created a stochastic
claims model from scratch, which I think is quite an achievement considering I've only had six
months training on VBA!
LCP is an ideal size; it is small enough for the company to evolve quickly and for employees'
voices to be heard, yet it is large enough to have a very varied work supply. I have been
really impressed at how quickly the management react to suggestions and initiatives from staff.
I keep fit by playing football in the LCP football team - which has been good fun and great to
meet others in the Partnership - and I cycle to work every day.
Philippa, Pensions Actuarial, Winchester
I have been at LCP for almost a year, and its amazing to see how much
you can learn in a short time. I have been involved in such a variety
of work; every day is different.
I have made some brilliant friends here, making the atmosphere in the office relaxed but focused.
Winchester for me has definitely been the right choice as an alternative to London.
Lots of us live close to work making it easy to go out together at night
and take advantage of what Winchester has to offer - plenty of pubs and
bars. We also have a lot of office social events. Since I started we have
had pizza in the park, a Winchester pub crawl, table football competition,
bowling amongst other things.
Study-wise, you need to put in the work. I studied maths at Cambridge which
has helped me with some of the concepts in the syllabus and for me the most
difficult aspect is finding time to study. LCP know how
important it is to have a life outside work and provide lots of
support to help achieve this.
One thing I've really noticed since I've been here, a career
here is what you make of it. There are so many opportunities to get
involved and to progress in what interests you, and if you are doing well it
is noticed. I'm looking forward to the next few years!
Rob, Pensions Actuarial, Winchester
I started at LCP 2 years ago, but it seems like it was only yesterday! The time
has flown by and I have loved every minute of it. The work
is interesting and varied and the atmosphere in the office is brilliant. I was
initially a little apprehensive about moving to Winchester, like most graduates
after university I wanted to go to London, but once I arrived I realised
this was the place for me.
There is always something going on, especially on a Friday night and although
Winchester is quite a small city there is still plenty to do. If you combine
this with playing rugby 3 times a week, if I lived in London I don't think I
would have time for the dreaded study!!!
The exams are difficult, that can't be denied. I studied MORSE at Warwick before
joining LCP so I had a fair idea what I was letting myself in for; well at least
I thought I did! Finding time to study is hard, balancing work, a social life and
study is always tricky. LCP are very supportive and realise
the importance of balancing all three in progressing as a successful student, but
there is no getting around the fact you have to just put the hours in.
Although I work in pensions I have been lucky enough to work on a
wide range of clients such as investment and employee share option schemes as
well as my normal pensions work. This ensures everyday is different and you are always
learning something new.
