Working as a summer intern

We offer summer internships in the following locations:

What areas can I work in?

We currently offer summer internships in the following business areas:

  • Pensions - advising companies and trustees on designing pension schemes, valuing and managing accumulated pension commitments, the impact of new legislation, and the pensions implications of mergers and acquisitions.
  • Investment - helping companies and trustees to manage risk and decide on the best way to manage the assets of their pension funds.
  • Insurance (London office only) - giving advice to general insurance companies on reserving and financial risk management, building models to calculate capital requirements, pricing insurance contracts and helping insurance companies implement Solvency II.
  • Business Analytics (London office only) - using mathematical modelling to help companies make better decisions and reduce risk . Our Business Analytics team works on a wide range of projects, from modelling the effect of government policy on the future of the GB electricity market to estimating the regulatory capital requirements of financial organisations.

However, we are keen for you to make the most of your internship so if you are interested in experiencing a variety of departments, we will do our best to give you the opportunity to work on projects in alternative departments.

What will I do day to day?

As a summer intern you will get involved in the same work as our trainee actuaries on the graduate programme. So you'll be involved in a whole variety of projects and be given real responsibility from day one.

Joining one of our Pensions Actuarial, Investment, Insurance or Business Analytics teams you'll work on a range of clients from FTSE 100 and global companies to smaller private firms. Undertaking tasks such as calculations by hand and writing spreadsheets, to drafting letters and reports for our clients.

You'll work alongside a number of colleagues, from recently recruited graduates to experienced partners of the firm - giving you a chance to find out about their experiences of the actuarial profession and LCP.

What's more, we are keen to present you with opportunities to meet clients. So we'll do our best to take you along to client meetings during your internship. Then you'll see first hand what being a consulting actuary is really about.

Training

At LCP we invest a lot of time in the training and development of our new graduates to help them progress well in their careers. We offer the same structured training and support to our summer interns.

We'll provide you with all the in-house and technical training you'll need for your day-to-day work, eg computer systems, pensions legislation and actuarial techniques. You'll also receive plenty of on-the-job training as you undertake various tasks. Tasks, which we will make sure, are structured to offer you the widest possible experience in all aspects of what we do.

You'll be assigned a "buddy" to support you throughout your internship who you can speak to if you are unsure of anything. They will typically be a first year on our graduate programme. Giving you a great chance to ask questions and hear their experiences with LCP - settling in, the industry, the work, the exams and of course the social side!

Social

With plenty of social and sporting events arranged, we've been told that we're a friendly and sociable firm. We have several company sports teams and organise a wide variety of social events over the summer. There are lots of informal events too and plenty of invitations to drinks after work. It's no coincidence that our London and Winchester offices are both set within easy reach of the many attractions they have to offer. You'll certainly never be stuck for somewhere to go on a Friday night!
